Emotional Resilience: A Manifestation of God’s Love

By Sara Ferrell

No one is exempt from the challenges of this day and age. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional setbacks are real. There is help for those who experience such challenges.

Self-reliance is an umbrella term for how prepared we are to take care of ourselves and our loved ones when facing many of life’s challenges.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Hurst area offers free Self-Reliance classes for community and church members. Sara Ferrell from a congregation in Hurst, shares her experience from participating in a class over a year ago.

“I had the opportunity to participate in the Self-Reliance course, ‘Finding Strength in the Lord: Emotional Resilience.’ I really feel that the class was a tender mercy from the Lord for me. I didn’t know when I began just how much I would need the other women in my class for the emotional and spiritual support group they proved to be for me.

The course is very much like the other Self-Reliance courses: it is packed with very practical life skills information (emotional health related), supported by gospel principles. It really felt like a small Relief Society group (organization of women in the church) combined with a group therapy session. It felt like Relief Society because of the spiritual focus on how we can gain strength from our faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ, and group therapy because there were many chances to share our specific struggles and discuss as a group. The class is incredible but it is also emotionally intimate, so prepare yourself to be vulnerable!

‘Finding Strength in the Lord: Emotional Resilience’ was extremely timely for me. Through the 10-week course, my personal life went through an upheaval. Heavenly Father knew I needed this class to bolster my faith and strength in order to withstand the challenges I would face.

Because of the increased faith in the Savior that I found in this class, I was able to face my trials with strength, courage, patience, and understanding that was very obviously beyond my natural capacity.

I am so grateful for the course and to the wonderful women who were (and are) so loving and supportive during a really difficult time in my life!”
